Starting with a Photo, Ending Somewhere Else

Lately, I’ve been writing again — more than I have in years. I’ve written thousands of radio ads, a few screenplays, marketing copy, and more long-winded emails than I care to admit. But until recently, I hadn’t written anything that felt entirely mine.

That changed a few weeks ago when I started a photoblog-slash-newsletter (still debating what to call it). Each post begins with one of my photographs — usually pulled from the archive — and unfolds into a short story or reflection tied to that moment. Sometimes it’s what happened just before the shot. Sometimes it’s what happened after. And sometimes, it’s simply what the image evokes.

It’s not always dramatic or profound. Often, it’s just about noticing something small — a look, a gesture, a scrap of light. Things most people overlook but that, for me, form the quiet fabric of a life. Observing, reflecting, remembering — that’s really the heart of it.

I think part of this came from discovering the Slow Movement — the idea that life feels richer when we stop rushing past it. That we find meaning in stillness, even if it’s just for a minute or two.

That’s what led me to start publishing Still Stories. It’s on Substack for now, and if you’re curious — or feel like you could use a pause now and then — I’d love for you to join me. It’s free to subscribe, and you’ll get a few posts a week, delivered right to your inbox.

I’m still figuring things out as I go — including whether Substack is the best long-term home. But for now, I’m simply trying to share something small, human, and grounded a few times a week.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, I hope you’ll come along.
